Shiva is both destroyer and transformer. His destruction isn’t evil—it clears away the old so new creation can occur. Shiva is also lord of yoga and meditation, often depicted in deep meditation on Mount Kailash. He has a complex personality—he can be fierce and terrifying or calm and benevolent.

Shiva is shown with a third eye, a cobra around his neck, and the Ganges River flowing from his hair. His consort is Parvati, who also appears in fierce forms like Kali and Durga.

Krishna is one of Hinduism’s most beloved gods. As an avatar of Vishnu, Krishna descended to earth to restore dharma. He’s depicted as a playful child, a passionate youth who played the flute and danced with cowherds, and as the wise teacher of the Bhagavad Gita. It involves ethical living, physical postures, breath control, concentration, and meditation.

Most Hindus blend elements from different paths. You might be devoted to Krishna (bhakti), fulfill family duties selflessly (karma), study the Upanishads (jnana), and practice meditation (raja). The paths complement each other.

Hinduism Today

Hinduism remains a living, evolving tradition.

Modern reform movements have shaped contemporary Hinduism.
